Class description:

This 1-day class is to give you general knowledge on using water-based liquid metal binder and how to mix, apply and polish liquid metal. Its benefits and tips for selling.

We will be using a water-based liquid binder. Application methods will be with trowel, roll and/or brush.

If there is time we will also use a solvent based liquid metal.

Tools required:

  • Gloves

  • (4) 12 x 12 or 12 x 14 Primed Hardboard Tempered 1/8 inch (You can use your favorite boards for samples. I tend to use the one I recommend because it is lighter weight for travel. Use your favorite high quality primer.

  • Respirator Half-face respirator with P2 particulate filters is recommended.

  • Flexible trowel. May be purchased from Faux Design Studio or Color Atelier. You can direct ship to venue.

Optional:

If you are driving and have a SurfPrep, Festool rotary sander you can share, please let the instructor know.

(Be warned that if you are flying your metal boards will get flagged at Security. You may be asked to take them out so security can run a check on the boards.)

SurfPrep demo products used during the cabinet class on Tuesday will be 30% off. These are the same great products I recommend using with the liquid metal!

Kathy Boyd

Kathy has used and tested over 14 liquid metal binders from around the world including water, polyester, acrylic, solvent and epoxy based binders. All can achieve the same end result “look”, but some are definitely easier to use, are more environmentally friendly and stronger. There is also a difference in metal quality, customer service and the overall integrity of a company.
